Pinched Nerve Care in Missoula, MT

    Table Of Contents

A pinched nerve happens when nearby tissue, such as a disc, a joint or a tight muscle, presses on or irritates a nerve. In the neck it can send pain, numbness or tingling into the shoulder, arm and hand. In the low back it can travel into the hip and down the leg, which many people call sciatica. At Krieg Chiropractic Center we look for where the irritation starts, then use gentle, low-force care to take pressure off the area.

Signs you may have a pinched nerve

    • Sharp or burning pain that travels from the neck into the arm, or from the low back into the leg
    • Numbness or pins and needles in the hand, fingers, leg or foot
    • A weak grip, or a leg that feels weak when you climb stairs
    • Pain that gets worse in certain positions, like looking down at a phone or sitting for a long time
    • Stiffness in the neck or back that limits how far you can turn or bend

    Arm numbness and tingling

The nerves that run down your arm leave the spine in your neck. When one of them is irritated near the spine, you can feel numbness or tingling far away in the hand. Numbness can also start at the elbow or wrist, so we check the whole path of the nerve instead of guessing.

    How we help

    • A careful exam. We check posture, range of motion, reflexes, strength and feeling to find which area is involved, and take X-rays when your exam calls for them.
    • Gentle adjustments. Dr. Krieg uses Blair upper cervical and other low-force techniques. Dr. Dettmann uses instrument-assisted and hands-on adjusting suited to each patient.
    • Exercise and soft tissue work to calm tight muscles and help the area move well again.
    • Simple home advice on desk setup, sleep position and movements to favor while you heal.

If your exam points to something that needs a medical doctor or imaging like an MRI, we tell you and help you get the right referral.

When to get emergency care first

Call 911 or go to the emergency room if back or neck pain comes with any of these: loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, weakness in an arm or leg that is quickly getting worse, a recent serious fall or crash, or fever with severe back pain. These need medical care right away.

What to expect at your first visit

Your first visit starts with a conversation about your history and goals, then an exam and any imaging we need before anything is recommended. We explain what we found and what we suggest, in plain words, before care starts.

New Patient Special: $24. It covers your consultation and exam, any necessary X-rays, your adjustment, and use of the Human Touch massage chair. By law this offer excludes Medicare and Medicaid recipients.

Request your appointment online or call (406) 541-8888. Same-day appointments are often available.

    Common questions

Can a chiropractor help a pinched nerve?

Many pinched nerves come from joints, discs or muscles that are not moving well. Chiropractic care aims to improve how those areas move and ease pressure on the nerve. Results differ from person to person, so we start with an exam and tell you honestly whether we think we can help.

Why does my arm go numb or tingle?

The nerves that serve your arm and hand start in your neck. When one is irritated near the spine, you can feel numbness or tingling in the arm or fingers. It can also come from the elbow or wrist, which is why we check the whole arm.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on how long the problem has been there, your general health and how your body responds. After your exam we explain a plan and recheck your progress along the way.

    Do I need X-rays?

Not always. If your history and exam call for X-rays, they are included in the New Patient Special.
