COMFORT AND POSITIONING THROUGH PREGNANCY

Care for Your Back, Pelvis and Hips Through Pregnancy

Care aimed at the back, pelvis and hips while your body carries a changing load. Side posture with proper support, light force, and no rotation through the abdomen. This care sits alongside your obstetric care. It does not replace any part of it, and we will not ask you to change anything your provider has advised.

The Webster Technique is a gentle chiropractic method used during pregnancy. It focuses on pelvic balance: light contacts to the sacrum and supporting ligaments so the pelvis can move more evenly as the body changes. The aim is comfort and mechanical function in the low back, pelvis and hips. It does not replace obstetric care, and we do not make claims about labor, delivery, or the position of the baby.
WHAT CHANGES

Why the Low Back and Pelvis Take the Strain

Two changes arrive together during pregnancy, and between them they explain most of the discomfort people come in with.

Load moves forward

As the baby grows, the center of gravity moves forward. The low back curves a little more to compensate, and the muscles along the spine and around the hips work harder simply to keep you upright.

Ligaments soften

The tissues that normally hold the pelvic joints firm soften during pregnancy. That is a normal and necessary change, and it means the sacroiliac joints and the pubic joint move more than they are used to moving.

Why it hurts

More movement in a joint plus a heavier and differently placed load is a reliable recipe for soreness. That is the mechanical picture prenatal chiropractic care is aimed at.
TRIMESTER BY TRIMESTER

What Tends to Come Up in Each Trimester

A general pattern rather than a schedule. Every pregnancy runs its own course.

First trimester

The bump has not changed your mechanics much yet, so the complaints we see are often ones you already had. Fatigue and nausea can mean more time lying down and less movement, which stiffens joints that were already stiff.

Second trimester

The load starts shifting forward in earnest, and pelvic and low back complaints become common. Side posture with a pillow between the knees becomes the standard set-up. This is also when many people first notice sciatic type pain down the back of one leg.

Third trimester

Everything is heavier and the ribs, hips and pubic joint take more of it. Sleep is often the biggest complaint. Visits are shorter and gentler, and we work around whatever is comfortable that day.
ON THE DAY

What a Prenatal Chiropractic Visit Involves

Before anything else

How far along you are, how the pregnancy is going, what your obstetric provider has said, and where it hurts.

The adjustment

Light contact and low force, without rotation through the abdomen or low back. If a position does not feel right, we change it rather than working around it.

After the birth

Feeding posture, carrying a growing baby and broken sleep all load the neck and upper back. You are welcome back whenever you are ready.

Getting on the table

Side posture with supports placed so there is no pressure across the abdomen. Take as long as you need to get comfortable before anything begins.

Afterwards

Simple positioning suggestions for sleeping, sitting and getting in and out of a car, which is often where the sharpest pain shows up.

What we do not claim

This care is not offered as a way to influence labor length, delivery outcomes or the position of the baby. It is aimed at comfort and mechanical function in your back, pelvis and hips. Anything concerning the pregnancy itself belongs with your obstetrician or midwife, and we will always say so.
PREGNANCY CARE QUESTIONS

Questions We Are Asked Most

How will I lie on the table once I have a bump?

Comfortably. Most prenatal care here is delivered in side posture, with pillows and supports positioned so there is no pressure across the abdomen. You are never asked to lie face down flat. If a position is uncomfortable at any point, say so and it is changed.

Is the adjustment different from a regular one?

Yes. The force used is lighter, the positioning is different, and no rotation is used through the abdomen or low back. Our practice already works with low-force technique, so this is a matter of adapting an approach we use daily.

Should I tell my obstetrician or midwife?

Yes, and please do. Chiropractic care during pregnancy sits alongside your obstetric care rather than replacing any part of it. We will not ask you to stop or change anything they have advised.

Why does pregnancy affect the back and pelvis so much?

Two things happen at once. The center of gravity moves forward as the baby grows, which changes how weight passes through the low back and pelvis. At the same time the ligaments that normally hold the pelvic joints firm become more elastic, so those joints move more than they are used to.

When during pregnancy can I come in?

Any point, including before conception if you are already dealing with back or pelvic discomfort. Tell us how far along you are when you book so the visit is set up properly.

What do you not claim prenatal chiropractic care will do?

We do not make claims about labor length, delivery outcomes or the position of the baby. This care is aimed at comfort and mechanical function in your back, pelvis and hips during pregnancy.
